Small World
Product Review (submitted on 16 April 2012):
The beauty of Small World is in its simplicity. You could say it's an ideal "gateway game" to lure non-gamers from softer games like Monopoly, Taboo, etc. and towards more strategical games. The rules are easy to explain, the theme is fun, and with a limited number of turns, it doesn't take too long to play (about an hour). However, I love that it also has something for more experienced gamers looking for a challenge. Unlike most area control games, the focus in Small World is on the races-- their unique abilities, their powers, and the specific way each race changes the way you play.
Small World also has fantastic replay value. The board changes depending on the number of players, and there are different race/power combinations for the characters each time. There are even blank tiles for you to create your own custom race and power. If that isn't enough, there are a lot of expansions for this game which add even more variety to it, and for a much lower cost than other games' expansions.
In short, I highly recommend this game for board game novices and veterans alike.
